Married at 21

When people get to know me, they are always shocked that I am married. “OMG HOW OLD ARE YOU?” is something I hear quite often. I’m 21 in case your wondering. Another one I hear is “You have your whole life ahead of you, why didn’t you wait?” Oh gosh, I can’t even begin to tell you how much that question irks me.

I’m not saying you have to be married at 21. Everyone has their own time table, and God set mine up so that I met my husband at a young age. If you would have told me in high school that I would be married in a few years, I would have laughed in your face and walked away. However, life is so funny. If you haven’t heard the song ‘Life Changes’ by Thomas Rhett, I will link it down below. There is a line that really resonated with me and it says “I bought a ring and she said “I do”, But everybody else said, “man, you’re twenty-two, “Whatcha trying to prove?” ,”Hey why don’t you wait?”,’Cause I’ve been waiting on her since the second grade.” I’m not trying to prove anything. God just put my best friend into my life early, and it just means I get to spend even more time with him in this life.

There are also a lot of misconceptions about getting married early that I want to squash.

“You need to figure out your life first.”

Do we honestly ever have life figured out, like ever? This way, I get to figure it out with my best friend by my side. We are in this together, and I think that’s the best thing about all of this. For the rest of my life, I will have someone to lean on and talk about life with.

“You are going to miss so many opportunities.”

Actually, I have more opportunities now. My husband I are going to be traveling the world together while also planning for and starting a family. Like honestly, I have so many opportunities that have arisen from finding my forever friend. So if that is your main concern, don’t let it be!

The above pictures were taken within a two week period… Does it look like we are missing out on anything? Hmmmmmm…..

“You’re too young! It won’t work out.”

Wait, so who decides whats too young? Okay I mean there is obviously a point where you’re too young, but the point is, I am over 20 and I knew this was the guy I was going to marry since the moment I met him. Also, why does me being young have anything to do with our marriage not working out? I have been married for a little less than a year, but I’m having the time of my life, and I fall deeper in love with my husband everyday. Being young doesn’t have anything to do with your marriage not lasting. Listen to the stories from your grandma and grandpa who were high school sweethearts and now they have been married for over 50 years. It just isn’t the norm to be married so young anymore. However, don’t let people tell you if your marriage will succeed. If you truly love eachother, it will.

“OMG are you PREGNANT?”

HAHAHAHA no. Just because I decided to get married at 21 doesn’t mean I’m pregnant. Why does everyone just assume this? Its honestly really silly, and I was asked this so many times when I announced I was getting married.

“How will you support each other?”

Okay, so this is a worry that many people may have. Luckily in our case, the military is a stable career, so we don’t really have to worry about this. It may not be like this for everyone, but it is something people have said to me. Also, how is it any of your business Sharon?

“What do your parents think?”

Our parents support our marriage 100%, thanks for being so concerned! (roll eyes) My husband and I are very lucky to have parents that support our marriage and our decision to get married young.

“How will you keep friends?”

We both have friends, and we are so lucky that they completely understand that marriage is fulltime and also the most important thing we do. Honestly, I do keep a little more to myself and my husband because he is my priority. I don’t go out all the time because I use my freetime to talk to him about our days and life. I am so blessed because I have friends that truly understand this and still love me. They understand that I need that time for my husband, and they don’t question it. Thanks guys! I love ya’ll! If your friends cannot support your marriage, are they really the right friends?

“What about your dreams?”

My dreams didn’t go away when I met my husband, they just changed to where he was in them too. I started having new dreams too, like I am now dreaming of having kids and being a mom. I dreamed to travel the world, and now I can enjoy it with my best friend. If its the right person, your dreams won’t disappear. You might have to be a little more flexible and compromise, though. I thought I was going to move to NYC and write for Vogue, but now I see the opportunity to write around the world through my blog. Same dream, different context, and I seriously would not change ANYTHING about it.

If your getting married young, congrats! You found your someone early! It’s awesome, so don’t let the haters get to you! They might just be jealous…. don’t tell them I said that. 🙂

I couldn’t help but smile reading through the post. You are a strong headed no nonsense girl and believe you me, it’ll take you places. Congratulations for the lovely year spent together with your partner and wish you many more to come. Really glad that you chose to divert your energy in appreciating the beauty of life and your relationship rather than over unwanted and unnecessary gossip. All the best with your en-devours 🙂 .
