Travel Diaries: Surviving a 13 Hour Car Ride

It’s summer, so that means traveling. While flying is ideal, it can also be fun to drive. This past weekend, we drove the thirteen hours from Virginia to Tampa Florida to visit my brother for one last family hoorah before we all move to different states. Some of these tips may be obvious, but this is how we survived a thirteen hour car ride!

Bring a pillow.

Sleeping in the car can be horrible and uncomfortable. However, you can find comfort putting a pillow between you and the window to avoid the rude awakening of hitting a pothole. However, make sure you don’t leave your driver hanging the whole time!

Make fun stops.

You need to make stops along the way to stretch your legs. It doesn’t matter where you stop, but it is a lot of fun to find unique roadside attractions. We always stop at South of the Border on the NC and SC border. It is so tacky that it is actually fun to stop and look in all the gift shops.

Keep your eyes on the prize!

Plan your trip to keep you entertained on the car ride. I researched what it costs to take pictures with dolphins, what theme parks there are, and what other activities are in the area. It makes time go faster, and you will have an idea of what you want to accomplish throughout the week.

Coordinate bathroom and food stops.

Coordinating your bathroom and food stops will save time and you will get to your destination faster and with more ease. Also, see what small diners are in the area. The food will taste much better than a fast food joint, and you can see what kind of food is popular in the area you are visiting.

Make a bomb playlist!

Nothing passes times faster than hosting your own private car concert. Create a playlist before you leave on your trip so that you’re ready to rock as soon as you hit the road.

Make the most of it.

I know, riding in a car for that long is not fun….. at all. However there are things that can make it a little easier. Use this time to catch up on reading, if you don’t get car sick, or just kick your feet up and relax.
